As Elena investigates the two cases, family secrets, identity and institutional pressure collide, and she discovers that appearances can be deceiving, while finding the truth is not always the same as delivering justice.

The investigator
Commissaria Elena Rinaldi
Commissaria Elena Rinaldi is not a solitary detective with nothing waiting
for her beyond the case. She is a wife, a mother to neurodivergent children
and a working woman balancing demanding investigations with school concerns,
family obligations, old wounds and the endless practical responsibilities of
ordinary life. Her distinctive way of seeing patterns others overlook makes
her a formidable investigator, particularly when evidence, identity, family
loyalties and institutional pressure refuse to align.
Set against the pressures of contemporary Rome, The Lost Suitcase
explores queer identity, family prejudice and the right to be recognised on
one’s own terms, while remaining first and foremost a character-led police
mystery.
In Italy, a commissaria is a senior police officer who leads investigations,
questions witnesses and coordinates the work of her team. Elena’s title is
the feminine form of commissario.
